Obsidian Rock: A Vase Using Sculpting and Kurinuki Technique

Constructed and glaze by Alex Osorio Ojeda

Why?: From October - December, I made it a goal to learn to make pottery using sculpting and kurinuki tecnique. It achieves a texture that cannot done through throwing or slab technique.

In order to begin splitting the clay, I had to draw two circles in the middle of the block. The one surrounding the small circle would indicate where to chip away the excess. Anything on the outside would be what was to be removed. The clay in between both the large and small circle is to be left and the clay inside the small circle is the opening for the cup.

Additionally, I had to also make the vase from two parts as it would have a narrow neck. I would not be able to make it from one pieces without the risk of it splitting or breaking while carving out the opening.
